It’s the most wonderful time of the year – to say, ‘I do!’ Everyone comes together at Christmas, so why not make it a fun family affair and celebrate your nuptials too? At Hawaiian Photography, we’ve photographed several Christmas weddings over the years and are experts in capturing the true magic of the day. Here’s five great tips for planning your festive wedding…

Choose seasonal colours

Greens and reds are the traditional colours associated with the season, but there are lots of other modern winter options to consider too. Other possibilities which will work with existing Christmas decorations include silver and white, silver and light blue, burgundy and gold, and gold and cream. Berry shades such as deep reds and purples combined with winter whites look beautiful, and provide a chic option for a Christmas wedding that’s not just festive, but luxurious too. Talk to your florist about what will work for you.

Don’t forget a Christmas tree

At Hawaiian Shirt Photography, we think a beautifully decorated Christmas tree is essential, at both your ceremony and reception. Use whatever colours you’ve chosen for your wedding colour scheme for your decorations, and consider placing mini presents under the tree as wedding favours for your guests. You could even add chocolate decorations to the tree and encourage everyone to help themselves! Everyone will love this – especially kids, and will really conjure the magic of Christmas.

Festive food for a Christmas wedding

No Christmas wedding is complete without a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. After you’ve had turkey and pigs in blankets for your wedding breakfast, follow this with a Christmas pudding for dessert. You could also have traditional fruitcake, gingerbread or stolen – all festive food favourites which your guests will love. For a post-dinner Christmassy treat, serve up coffee with gingerbread syrup, or Alcoholic eggnog or Baileys.

A Christmas wedding cake

From Christmassy colour palettes, to an charming winter wonderland, or even a dash of golden glamour, there’s a Christmas-themed wedding cake to suit all tastes. How about a bold geometric design in candy cane colours? Or a rustic showstopper with berries and pinecones? Alternatively, instead of having one big cake, you could opt for cupcakes which are decorated to look like Santa hats or with snowflake icing decorations.

Set the scene

So, got a Christmas tree and you’ve decided on your colour scheme, but there’s more you can do to set the scene for the perfect Christmas wedding. Ideas include giving your reception a market theme with a stall selling roasted chestnuts and mugs of mulled wine; hiring a snow machine to give everyone the white Christmas they’ve been dreaming of; festive wedding centrepieces, such as candles surrounded by holly; and decorating your venue with pinecones, baubles, tinsel and glitter. With a little thought, you can easily transform any venue into a fantastic winter wonderland.
